Grab & Go Summer Meals: Ages 1-18

To decrease issues of food security, NWCH and B’nai B’rith Camp (BBC) have coordinated a special Summer Meals Program for children between ages 1-18 years.
The Ridge Apartments and Beacon Crest Apartments were selected as distribution points for the summer meal program as the north and south access points while BBC provides meals at their facility located centrally off of Devil’s Lake Road in Lincoln City.  These sites are open to the public and are distributed through safe social distancing practices.
“We want to make sure during COVID 19 that food security is not an issue.  Lincoln County is a tourist driven county and we have the highest unemployment rate in the state at 26.2%  in April compared to the state level of 14%.  That is a quarter of our workforce.  COVID 19 is no respecter of persons and the impacts.  Children and families need our help,” says NWCH Executive Director, Sheila Stiley.
There are great existing programs.  Lincoln City has a wonderful Food Pantry open two days a week and the School District has done a great job distributing meals.  These additional food programs are supplemental to these two existing programs.  Many youth relied on schools for healthy meals, or just meals in general during the school year.  “Since COVID 19, it has become our mission to ensure youth and families still  have access to meals all summer and beyond.  The partnership with BBC has been life altering for many.  Often times there are tears in the eyes of families who are able to obtain food for their children, especially minority groups who do not have traditional access to unemployment or other financial resources,” says Stiley.  During the first week alone, 2,780 meals were distributed to 347 children.
“We want to thank Allison Kaufman, Operations Director at B’nai B’rith Camp and her staff who prepare all these meals.  We also need to recognize our outstanding staff here at NWCH for quickly organizing this great resource and partnership with BBC, Darleen Webster.  Darleen is our Resident Services Coordinator at two facilities, one of which is Beacon Crest.  She has recruited our great Volunteer who distributes at our multiple sites.  Our other staff (the man behind the camera) Robert Bare, has stepped in to help with all of our food distributions 4 days a month on our large distribution days from the Lincoln County Food Share in conjunction with the Ridge Community Manager, Glenna Brown.  We have some big hearts here,” says Stiley.
